Tom Smith, owner of Wildrose Mississippi, detailed canine communication techniques in the March/April edition of Shooting Sportsman. In his article Can you hear me now? The three ts of canine communication, Tom emphasizes timing, tempo, and tone to encourage successful dog training.


Wildrose Oxford was featured in the January/February issue of GunDog Magazine’s article “The Wildrose Way: A Closer Look At What Defines This Special Kennel That Started in the Heart of the South.”


Wildrose Juice was featured on the cover of Hunt & Field, Winter 2024 edition.


2023


Wildrose International was featured in the Dec/Jan edition of Covey Rise Magazine entitled “Wildrose Revisited.” The author, William Jack Stephens, and photographer, Dwayne Bratcher, captured perfectly the Wildrose experiences, culture, and legacy of the Wildrose Gentlemen’s Gundog. The article emphasized the training, transition, and trust embedded in the creation of our regional facilities, which further serve our versatile British Labrador companions and the Wildrose community: The perfect complement to a family’s sporting lifestyle.


Wildrose Juice (Danny x Amber), owned by Ole Miss Football Head Coach Lane Kiffin, became the unofficial mascot for the football team. In September of that year, Juice started retrieving the kickoff tee, becoming the first live mascot for Ole Miss. He accumulated 54,000 Twitter followers (@juicekiffin) and a nationwide fanbase with many opposing teams.

 Juice became a star around Oxford, appearing at weddings, grand openings, and multiple events at the Ole Miss. When not at football games or public appearances, Juice can be found at continental wingshoots, in duck blinds, and on upland hunts. He truly showcases the versatility of the Wildrose Labrador.


Wildrose was featured in Oxford Magazine to commemorate our 50th anniversary. Tanyrhallt Teddy of Artistryn “Teddy” was showcased on the magazine cover. The article explores our past and present and delves into the endless possibilities on the horizon for the future of Wildrose. (September 2023)


Ducks Unlimited Magazine featured an 8-page article on the Wildrose methodology of “communicating with your retriever.”  Katie Behnke’s photos appeared in the article as well as on the front and back covers of the issue (all Wildrose Gundogs).  According to the editor, this is only the second time in Ducks Unlimited history that a photographer was featured on the front and the back covers of a single issue.  Also, Katie’s cover photo of Wildrose Black Ice (son of Deke the DU Mascot) placed her as the first female photographer to capture a Ducks Unlimited Magazine cover. 2022


Wildrose 50 Year Anniversary (1972-2022)

The Wildrose pack celebrates five decades of continuous service to the sporting dog enthusiast community, a signature brand of Gentleman’s Gundogs and Adventure Labradors that complement a family’s outdoor lifestyle.


Wildrose Midwest officially opened a regional training facility in January 2022.  In May 2023, a superb property for the kennel’s campus was secured which had served as a prominent Labrador training facility for years.  The property in Sheboygan, Wisconsin was skillfully developed offering a wide range of training environments along with climate-controlled kennels, bird pens, a health care location, and a complete on-site residence.  Wildrose Midwest is owned by Allan Klotche. 2021


Wildrose Kennels was featured for the first time in Hook & Barrel magazine highlighting the Adventure Dog Program in the article “The Destination Dog”. (Nov/Dec 2021)


Wildrose Gamble was featured on the limited edition Ducks Unlimited/Purina Pro Plan dog food bags.

The Drake TV weekly training tips first appeared on DU’s “World of Ducks.” The series became the longest, continuously- aired segment on retriever training in history. (2001)


The first Wildrose seminars were conducted at Wildrose Kennels, Oxford, for the training of dogs and their handlers, “The Wildrose Way.” They continue annually at our facilities and at destinations across the country. (2001)


Wildrose with Drake, the DU dog, began conducting annual workshops and demonstrations for Ducks Unlimited at their famed Great Outdoor Festivals in Memphis, Tennessee and Oshkosh, Wisconsin. (2001)


The Wildrose monthly training newsletter, predecessor of the Wildrose Journal, was first published online and continues, uninterrupted, to date. (2000)

Ducks Unlimited contracted with Wildrose Kennels to produce their first mascot, Drake. (2000)


FTCh Angus and FTW Drummer were imported by Wildrose, the first of many titled dogs to be imported from the U.K. ushering in a new generation of fantastic game dogs, “The Gentleman’s Gundog.” (2000)


1972 - 1999


An association was established with Nigel Carville, Astraglen Kennels, Portadown, N. Ireland which continues today. Nigel won the Irish Championship in 2005 with Intl. FTCH Astraglen Brooke. (1999)


Wildrose Kennels was purchased by Mike Stewart from Ed Apple and merged with the existing training facility in Oxford. As the Tennessee property, facilities and dogs were liquidated and sold as individual components, Mike secured the rights to the company’s name, website, and logo. “The Gentleman’s Gundog” was born. (1999)


Ed Apple, of Memphis, Tennessee, purchased Wildrose Kennels, located in Grand Junction, Tennessee, from Robert Milner. Mr. Apple made strides in improvement of the facilities and brood stock. Brood stock was converted to 100% British or Irish imported genetics and the first Field Trial Champion stud dogs were imported. (1995)


A 143-acre property was purchased in Oxford, MS, for training purposes; facility construction began. (1988)


In Oxford, emphasis shifted to breeding and training beagles, successfully competing in and judging AKC/UKC beagles field trials. (1980’s)


Mike Stewart began offering dog training in Oxford for retrievers, pointers, and obedient companions. (1972)


Wildrose Kennels was established in Grand Junction, Tennessee by Robert Milner. (1972)
